Description
The mentor will play a key role in implementing a comprehensive strategy to support the subcounties, health facilities, and communities using a systems-strengthening approach for effective Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) initiatives, with a particular focus on informal settlements.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in development studies, public health, population health, environmental health, or nutrition.
- Minimum of three (2) years relevant work experience and previous experience in WASH programming in the NGO setting, particularly urban WASH programming.
- Experience working with USAID-funded programs, particularly in the integrated health service delivery programs.
- Basic training and expertise on infection prevention and control (IPC).
- Ability to successfully represent the project as a WASH mentor at various levels (subcounty, facility, and bilateral organisations).
- Strong linkages and relationships with sub-county government; health facilities; and implementing partners within Nairobi County working on WASH programs.
- Knowledgeable and competent in participatory approaches applied in community hygiene and sanitation promotion like UCLTS and community engagement approaches.
- Experience of and commitment to working through systems of community participation and accountability.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint).
- Fluent in English, Kiswahili, and one or more local languages.
Responsibilities
- Work specifically with the Sub County team, including Sub County WASH focal persons, PHO, MoH, and other SCHMT teams, to guide WASH activities in Nairobi County at facility and community levels.
- Support the Sub County teams on WASH trainings and refresher courses for the Sub County public health officers and WASH focal persons.
- Conduct quality UCLTS triggering, follow-up, and certification activities in target communities.
- Implement hygiene promotion activities appropriate to the context to ensure that technical and social aspects of water and sanitation programming are integrated.
- Participate in preparing quarterly report and annual report of the WASH component of the project
- Liaise directly with communities, local institutions, and local authorities on hygiene and sanitation issues, as well as other agencies carrying out similar activities regularly to avoid duplication.
- Supervise the non-technical/auxiliary staff at the CHVs, WASH Champions, and other relevant staff on the project progress (community and facilities-based intervention staff).
- Prepare weekly reports for all WASH interventions done.
- Documentation of success stories for the WASH program.
- Coordinate other Implementing Partners at the subcounty level to ensure that the various aspects of the WASH response are integrated.
- Support in monthly data quality reviews with the subcounty teams.
- Support in reconciliation of completed activities, including data and reports, and processing of payments for the completed activities.
- Any other task as requested by the supervisor.
